Alan James "Awaseah Enaniew" Caldwell, age 68 of Neenah, formerly of Neopit, died on Thursday, December 22, 2016 in Neenah. Born on May 27, 1948 in Shawano, he is the son of the late James J. and Letitia B. (Daily) Caldwell. Alan is a 1966 graduate of Shawano High School and earned a Bachelor Degree in History and Education from UW-Green Bay in 1976. He pursued his Master's Degree at UW-Madison, which he completed in 1996. Alan served his country in the U.S. Army from 1968-1971. He was discharged as Specialist 5th Class – Field Artillery and Adjutant General Corps. Alan was united in marriage to Cathy Jo Miller on August 19, 1978 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Neopit. He served 35 years as a classroom teacher, elementary school principal, athletic coach, program administrator, and education consultant and college professor. Highlights of his educational career was being credited with the development of state legislation known as Act 31, that requires all public schools and teacher training programs to teach about history, culture and sovereignty of Wisconsin's American Indian tribes, including the treaty rights of the Chippewa tribes, which was done while working for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (during the Superintendence of Herbert J. Grover).
He served on the Board of Directors of the following: Menominee Enterprises, Inc. / Menominee Tribal Enterprises; National Indian Education Association; Wisconsin Indian Education Association; College of Menominee Nation; Woodland Boys & Girls Club; Wisconsin ACLU and Wisconsin FACETS. He is a retired member of the Wisconsin Humanities Council; a gubernatorial appointee to the American Indian Language and Culture Education Board; served as a consultant to several public television broadcasting productions and served on a number of other tribal, state, educational, community and national boards, councils and committees.
Alan enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and fellow members of VMN, enjoyed pow-wow dancing (danced in pow-wows from Hawaii and Alaska to Washington D.C. and Canada), liked playing slots at the casino, enjoyed coaching and watching sports, especially football and boxing, doing native craft work and fixing things around the house… occasionally taking longer than expected to complete some of them.
Alan is survived by his wife, Cathy of Neenah; his children, Sean Thomas Caldwell of Milwaukee and Ami Leigh (Scott) Bathke of Neenah; four grandchildren, Kanapaen Sosaeh, Raziel James Dixon, Ella and Ethan Bathke; two brothers, Randall R. Denning of Chicago and Eugene (Margaret) Caldwell of Neopit; two sisters, Crystal Caldwell of Shawano and Charlotte Caldwell of Neopit.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leslie "Hutchie" Caldwell, Gordon Paige Denning; sisters, Margaret "Nonie" (Harold) Young, Stella (Joseph, Sr.) Smith, Ellen (John, Sr. Boyd, Mary Louise Bear, Lillian (Sam) Angell, Sharilynne Denning, Lorlei Beauprey; mother and father-in-law, Lenore and William "Bill" Miller; sisters-in-law, Linda Sue (Askinette) Caldwell; numerous nieces and nephews and special friend, Martin James "Bailey" Pamonicutt (USMC, KI-Viet Nam in June of 1969).
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Neopit with Rev. David Barrett officiating. Visitation will be held at the Neopit Community Center on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services on Tuesday. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the community center. Following the services, Military Rites will be conducted by the Veterans of the Menominee Nation American Legion Post #497, Wisconsin Indian Veterans Association – Oneida Chapter and Mohican Veterans Association. Burial will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in spring.
