Alberta "Shorty" Gulbronson, walked on peacefully to be with her creator on Saturday, September 10, 2011. Shorty's health had been slowly failing for the past two years. Shorty was born Alberta Miller, the daughter of Delbert Miller and Almeda Quinney on April 21, 1923 in Red Springs, near Gresham, WI. She attended school at the Wittenberg Indian School of a short time, where the nuns allowed her to sleep with her only surviving sister, Lois Welch. Shorty was later sent to the Indian School at Pipestone, Minnesota, but soon ran away and came home. After her parents passed on, Shorty and Lois lived in Red Springs with their uncle, Leonard "Jack" Miller, Sr., until Shorty met Frank Gulbronson. They were married on April 26, 1944 in Red Springs and the couple moved to Milwaukee. Frank preceded her in death in February of 1950. Shorty continued to live in Milwaukee most of her life where she was a homemaker and care giver. She loved to keep a place as neat as a pin and to iron everything she could get her hands on. She cared to a special elderly gentleman named Matt for a number of years. After retiring in 1992 she moved back to the Stockbridge-Munsee Indian Reservation where she resided until her death. For the past two years Shorty lived at the Ella Besaw Assisted Living Facility on the Reservation. Shorty is survived by: a son, Glenn Gulbronson of Chiefton, FL, a sister, Lois Welch of Bowler, 19 grandchildren; Brian, Rick, Kevin, Chad, Kristy, Amy, Glenn Jr., Stephanie, Eric, Nicholas, Melissa, Melinda, Frank, Lesley, Christine, Jennifer, Leonard Jr., Brenda and Tammy along with numerous great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by two sons; Leonard Sr. and Delbert Gulbronson, two sisters; Marion and Vivian. Shorty was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making large meals and baking bread and sweets to give to neighbors and friends in addition to spending time with her sister Lois at the North Star Casino. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the Stockbridge Bible Church, N8606 Maplewood St. at Camp 14 Rd., Bowler with Pastors W. Ed Zook and Ernie Geeting officiating. Burial will be in the Stockbridge Indian Burial Grounds. Family and friends may call at the Swedberg Funeral Home, Gresham from 4 to 8 pm on Tuesday and then at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 am until the time of the services. The family would like to thank ALL staff of the Ella Besaw Center for their loving, caring support given to Shorty during her stay and Pastors W. Ed Zook, Ernie Geeting and Melinda Shriner for their prayers, devotions and visits at the Ella Besaw Center. Everyone was so nice and took such good care of Shorty and we can never thank you enough.
