Alice M. Newton, age 74 of Keshena, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, February 23, 2013 after suffering with a three year illness. Born on May 16, 1938 in Keshena, she was the daughter of the late Roy E. Peterson and Louise (Mahkimetas) Peterson Waukechon. On July 23, 1959 she was united in marriage to John R. Newton in Neopit. After marriage the couple made their home in Wheeling, IL where Alice was a stay at home mom raising their six children. The couple later returned to the Menominee Reservation and retired on Legend Lake. Alice worked for the Menominee Casino & Resort for seven years until her illness made it impossible for her to continue working. Alice was a member of the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Neopit. She loved spending time with her family and friends as well as making Indian Fry Bread. Alice is survived by: her husband of 53 years, John; children, David (Dale) Karbon of Shawano, Denise (Jeff) Kasprzak of Keshena, Maureen (Steve) Peterson of Shelby, MT, John (special friend, Darla) Newton, Jr. of Coeur D'Alene, ID, Tamara (Louis) Hayes of Williston, ND; 12 grandchildren, Amanda, Elenore and David Jr. Karbon, John and Alek Lebarge, Mychal, Dusty and Kayala Peterson, Sienna Hayes, Robert and Tashina Brewer, Cheyenne Kasprzak; 8 great-grandchildren; and 6 siblings, Norman (Helen) Peterson, Roy (Linda) Peterson, Rita (Rodrick) Connavichnah, Amber (Kenneth) Johnson, Annette Latender and Lucille Surprise. Alice was preceded in death by: children, Gary Newton, Allison Brewer; 2 grandchildren, Alek Peterson, James Brewer; her parents; her step father, Joseph Waukechon; a brother, Charles Peterson; and a sister, Evelyn Peterson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, March 1, 2013 at the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Keshena with Father David McElroy OPraem officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Parish Hall in Keshena from 4:00pm on Wednesday until the time of the service on Friday. A Parish Wake Service will be held on Thursday at 7pm.
