Alta M. Gunderson, age 95 of Bonduel, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2012 in Shawano. Born on March 19, 1916 in Waupaca, Alta is the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Olson) Rasmussen. Alta graduated from Shawano High School in 1934 and Shawano Teacher Training in 1935. Alta also graduated from Oshkosh State College with her BA in education. On May 28, 1938 in Shawano, Alta was united in marriage to Alfred Gunderson, who preceded her in death on January 29, 1992. Alta started teaching at Franklin School in 1935, then taught at Porter School from 1942-1945. In 1945, she transferred to Bonduel where she taught for 36 years until her retirement in 1982. After retiring, Alta substitute taught for five years. She was recognized in 1980 as Bonduel's District Teacher of the Year. In addition to teaching, Alta also spent many years driving school bus. She enjoyed bowling, watching the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Brewers, and was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cecil. She was a life member of the Wisconsin Education Association and the Shawano County Area Teachers' Association. She is survived by two daughters, Shelby Jean Bahr of Cecil; and Mary Ellen (Roy) Fischer of Cecil; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Alta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred; son, James Gunderson; son-in-law, Dennis Bahr; and a grandson, Jeff Bahr. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cecil with the Deacon Mike Grzeca officiating. Entombment will be in the Sacred Heart Mausoleum in Shawano. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 pm on Monday at the Swedberg-Wendt Funeral Home in Bonduel, and Tuesday at the church from 10:00 am until the time of the service.
