Alvin J. Mathew, age 83, of Cecil, passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2021. Alvin was born in Wolcott, Indiana on January 17, 1938, to the late Clarence and Melina (Tourangeau) Mathew. After high school, Alvin served in the United States Army for two years before receiving his honorable discharge. He was united in marriage to Rita Denton on May 5, 1961, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Remington, Indiana. Alvin was a dairy farmer for 24 years and later became an over the road truck driver for All States Trucking where he worked for over 34 years before retiring. In his free time Alvin enjoyed watching NASCAR, football, and tractor pulls. He loved to garden and drive his John Deere tractors. Alvin loved having a house filled with family, playing cards and telling long-winded stories.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Rita, their seven children: Darrell (Lori) Mathew, Elaine (Rick) Rusch, Randy (Nancy) Mathew, Valerie (Dan) Clausen, Diana (Dan) Boulanger, Cathleen (fianceé Brad Deneys) Moesch, and Donna (Dennis) Bergsbaken, twenty-one grandchildren: Brett (Erin Welcing) Mathew, Nicole Mathew, Ryan (Makayla Tomlins) Mathew, Breiley (Jason) Dordel, Taylor (Billy Tomchek) Rusch, Craig Rusch, Natalea (Beau) Court, Miranda Schulist, Michael (Carrie) Clausen, Matthew (Lystra) Clausen, Rachel (Samuel) Birtch, Jackson Boulanger, Travis Boulanger, Paige Boulanger, Megan Boulanger, Joshua Moesch, Kimberly Moesch, Brianna (Jordan) Rynish, Ashley (Ben) Pearce, Eric Bergsbaken, and Kaden Bergsbaken, nine great-grandchildren: Milo, Arabella, Benaiah, Ivy, Ember, Ellie, Nathanael, Amira, Atlas, and another on the way. He is further survived by a sister, Velma, other relatives, and friends.
Alvin is preceded in death by his parents and siblings: LaVern, Vincent, Vera and Evelyn.
A private family funeral service will be held and a memorial service and inurnment will take place in Indiana in the spring of 2022.
