Alvin P. Schumacher, age 98 of Shawano, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2012 in Shawano. Born on August 31, 1914 in the Town of Herman, he was the son of the late Henry and Emma (Schwartz) Schumacher. Alvin was born, raised and lived most of his life in the Shawano area. As a youngster, he worked in the logging camps in northern Michigan. On May 12, 1942 Alvin was drafted to the United States Army and served his country for more than three years during World War II. On November 20, 1947 he was united in marriage to Ida Jeske in Wakefield, MI. She preceded him in death on December 30, 1969. Alvin worked in maintenance at Morning Glory and painted houses of his off times. The family joked that Alvin probably painted most of the houses in the area at least once. Prior to working at Morning Glory he worked at Weber Veneer & Plywood. On October 15, 1971 he was united in marriage to Mary Speak in Shawano. She preceded him in death on November 1, 1987. Alvin was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano and the Gresham American Legion Post #390. In his free time, he enjoyed reading, fixing anything and refinishing it. Alvin is survived by: 2 sons, Daniel (Jane) of Shawano, Arnold of Holton, KS; 4 grandchildren, Aaron (Cristy) Walker, Joseph Walker, Heather Marie (Josh) Schmidt, Jamie Michelle Schumacher; 6 great-grandchildren, Madison, Christopher, Allison, Odessa, Bijou and Kori; and 3 step children, Clarence Williams, Lennie Brunson and Joe Pickney. Alvin was preceded in death by: his first wife, Ida; his second wife, Mary; his parents; 3 brothers, Ray (Elisabeth), Arley (Nancy) and Edwin (Pauline); and a step son, Carl Williams. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano with the Rev. Ted Andrada officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Rest Cemetery in the Town of Herman with Military Rites conducted by the Gresham American Legion Post #390. Visitation will be held at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano on Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday after 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. www.swedbergfuneralhome.com
