Arthur Michael Schabow, age 82 of Gresham, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2021. Art was born on May 15, 1939, to the late Stuart and Hattie (Fischer) Schabow in their home in Gresham. He graduated from Gresham High School and enlisted in the United States Army on January 20, 1958. After his honorable discharge, Art returned home to Gresham where he met the love of his life, Mary Umland. On October 20, 1962, Art and Mary were united in marriage in Gresham. The couple was blessed with one daughter and two sons, who were Art's pride and joy. Art co-owned the Schabow Bros. Standard Service Station, was the Treasurer of the baseball Club BABA, and enjoyed the outdoors where he loved to garden, fish and hunt. When not outdoors he enjoyed doing puzzles and enjoyed going to card club. Art loved his dogs, Deno, Coco and Mani. He was an active member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Gresham, where he served as an altar boy and ushered for 20 years.
Art is survived by his wife, Mary Schabow; daughter, Lanette (Jeff) Mayerl; sons, Scott Schabow and Brett (Jennifer) Schabow; grandchildren, Cole Schabow, Sydney Schabow, Hailey Mayerl and Hudson Mayerl; brother Gary (Judy) Schabow; Sisters, Mary Kersten, Donna (Dave) Wetzel and Vicki (Bob) Bender. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, Stuart, and Hattie Schabow; one infant daughter, and one infant brother.
A memorial service for Art will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 16, 2021, at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Gresham with Fr. David Hoffman and Fr. Nonito Barra officiating. Inurnment will be in the St. Francis Solanus Catholic Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Gresham American Legion Post #390. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorial donations should be directed to the American Heart Association, Muscular Dystrophy Association or Gresham Dollars for Scholars in Art's name.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to both the staff of Emerald Bay Retirement Community and Unity Hospice for the love, support, and wonderful care that they provided to Art and the entire family.
