Barbara J. Hughes, age 80 of Shawano, passed away on August 5, 2018. Barb was born in Birmingham, Alabama on February 21, 1938, a daughter of the late Clyde and Mary (Kuffskie) Abernathy. Barb met her future husband, James 'Jim' Hughes on a blind date in 1956 and on June 16, 1956, they were married in Mobile, Alabama. The couple made their home on a farm in Cecil, where they raised their family. After moving off the farm, Barb worked for Snyder Drug and Pick-N-Save. She loved a good party, dancing, trips to the casino, playing cards and a Sun-drop. She was a member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church White Clay Lake, where she was part of the Ladies Aid as well as the Cecil American Legion Auxiliary. More than anything, Barb cherished her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loved making big meals for the family to enjoy.
Barb is survived by: her husband of 62 years, Jim; one daughter, Julie Moesch of Shawano; two sons, Bret (Terri) Hughes of Bonduel and Tim (Monica Trester) Hughes of Bonduel; eight grandchildren, Derek (Emily Miller) LaRock, Ryan (Ashley) LaRock, Greg (Ashley) Hughes, Alisha (John) Rusch, Josh (Lisa) Hughes, Jenilee Hughes, Chad (Jess) Moesch and Chelsea (Kyle) Giesen; and 18 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by two sisters, Betty Parker and Mary-Virginia Hutto and one brother, Charles Abernathy.
She was preceded in death by: her daughter, Debbie LaRock; son-in-law, Duke Moesch, Jr.; her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral service for Barb will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church White Clay Lake with Rev. Steven Pockat officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 9:30 am until the time of the service.
