Bernard "Bernie" S. Delaney, died December 6, 2016 at Brookfield Rehab after battling a long illness. At the time of his death, Bernie was surrounded by his immediate family.
Bernie was born September 30, 1923 in Odanah, Wisconsin, the youngest of seven children. Bernie spent his early years growing up in Odanah and Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin.
Bernie enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, and served honorably until his discharge. While serving in the Army, Bernie married his beautiful wife, Mary Ruth Bast on December 28, 1943 while stationed in South Carolina. Bernie was also a proud member of American Legion Post 392 in Cecil Wisconsin, and later Post 537 in West Allis, Wisconsin.
After Bernie's discharge from the Army, he worked different jobs in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Northbrook, Illinois until he was hired as a trolley car operator in Milwaukee. He operated a trolley car until 1953 when he became a police officer for the city of Milwaukee. Bernie loved working as a police officer and received several commendations for bravery. He even appeared on a recruitment poster for the Milwaukee Police Department. After Bernie retired from the police department in 1978, he and his wife Mary moved to Cecil, Wisconsin where he worked several years for the Cecil Department of Public Works. After several years, Bernie and Mary moved around northern Wisconsin working as apartment managers or home caretakers. During this time, Bernie always found time to get away and be with his family that he was so close to. He especially loved being around his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bernie is survived by: his wife, Mary Ruth; two sons, Joseph and wife Bonnie Delaney, William and wife Dianna Delaney. Bernie has three granddaughters, Erin Delaney, Kelly and husband Tim Westendorf, Shannon and husband Sam Sova. Bernie also had 5 great grandchildren John, Micah, Ben, and Makenna Westendorf, and Max Sova. Bernie is also survived by his sister Shirley and numerous nieces and nephews along with many friends.
Bernie was preceded in death by: his parents Samuel and Josephine Delaney, his brother Wallace, and sisters Lorraine, Ruth, Flora, and Rhoda.
Memorial services for Bernie will be held at 3:00 pm on December 15, 2016 at Swedberg-Zastrow Funeral Home in Cecil with Deacon Mike Grzeca officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the funeral home following the service. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Mausoleum. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from on Thursday from 2:00 pm until the time of the service.
