"Smitty" Smith, Sr.
November 20, 1946 – February 2, 2017
Bernard L. "Smitty" Smith, Sr., beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Smitty was born in Keshena on November 20, 1946, the son of the late Joseph and Stella (Caldwell) Smith, Sr. He worked as a logger for many years and as a Menominee Tribal Police Officer for 15 years. On September 28, 1996, he was united in marriage to Janice Caldwell in Neopit. Bernard was a very active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Neopit and enjoyed taking communion to the Elders. Smitty enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf. He was a kind, big-hearted man who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Bernard is survived by: his loving wife, Janice; his children, Bernard "Gronks" (Holly) Smith, Jr, Joan (Chauncey) Webster, Jr., Bridget (Jesse Grignon) Smith, Angela Smith, Danica Smith, Bobbi (Jerome) Caldwell, Sharon Bruette and Monica (Tony Santana) Smith; his grandchildren, Derrin, Tre, Julien, Payton, Cole, Bernard III, Patrick, Yellow Rose, Charlie, Tnaya, Brent, Aniyah and Lexia. He is further survived by his siblings, Joseph "Puffer" (Dorothy) Smith, Sr., Gerald T. Smith, James (Robin) Smith, Mary Ninham, Stephen "Kooka" Smith and Mary "Tweet" Smith; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Mercedes; his parents; by his brother, Warren "Sarge" Smith; and twin brothers in infancy.
Funeral services for Smitty will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Neopit with Rev. Francis Zurbano officiating. Visitation will be held at the Smith residence at N3518 S. 1st Ave. in Neopit from 6:00 pm Thursday, February 2, 2017 until the procession leaves for the church on Saturday. A Parish Wake service will be held at the Smith residence on Friday at 7:00 pm.
