Bernice Shawano, age 83, of Zoar, Wisconsin passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday December 6, 2025. Bernice was born on March 3, 1942, in Keshena to the late Kechemow and Susan (Menomin) Kapishkowit. She was united in marriage to Jerry Shawano on August 5, 1994, in Keshena.

Bernice was a strong and independent woman who lived her life with warmth, humor, and an adventurous spirit. She enjoyed camping beneath the stars, traveling to new places, spending time at the casino, and cheering on her beloved Packers and Brewers. She was a constant presence at many close-knit family events, where her kindness, laughter, and strength made her everybody's favorite. Above all, Bernice was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt whose love and guidance will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.

Bernice is survived by her children, Valerie (Mark) Self, Muriel Waupoose, Rosemary (Shannon) Tucker, George Nahwahquaw, Sr., Mary Nahwahquaw, Denise Nahwahquaw, Leighton LaMotte, Jr., Lisa LaMotte, Jerry Nahwahquaw, Marquise LaMotte, Twila Shawano and Kemawin (Robert) Dess; many loving and adoring, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, Nelda (Lee) Goodman and Raymond Kapishkowit; and in-laws, Gwendolyn Shawano, Gary Shawano, Verna Reiter, Linette Shawano, Jerilyn Waupoose and Tina Shawano. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, a large extended family and friends.

Bernice is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Shawano; children, Norman Waupoose, Jr., Susan Waupoose, Leon Nahwahquaw, Sr., and Leland LaMotte; grandchild; great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara (Kapishkowit) Hauser; parents, Kechemow and Susan; and in-laws, Alberta Hatmaker and Quentin Shawano.

Honoring Bernice's wishes, she will be cremated and no formal funeral service will take place. The family will celebrate her life privately.
