Brian "Makohsaeh" Waukau, Sr., age 21, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 17, 2022, in Keshena. He was born on July 11, 2000, to Adam Waukau, Sr. and Cheyenne Johnson in Shawano. Brian was a graduate of Menominee Indian High School and the first student to graduate from the welding program from the College of Menominee Nation while still in high school. He earned his CDL at Fox Valley Technical College and completed Sawyer Training through Menominee Tribal Enterprises. He was a member of the Big Drum. He worked for the Log Dog Timber Company. Brian lived in Zoar most of his life and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He also liked picking shang and spearing.
He is survived by: his parents, his children Brian Waukau, Jr. and Aven Waukau, grandparents, Gwen Awonohopay, Leon Waukau, and Verna Shegonee; great-grandpa, James Einertson; brothers and sisters, Adam Waukau, Jr., Nevaeh Kaquatosh, Deanna Peters, Damien Peters, Calvin Waukau, and Memphis Waukau; numerous aunts and uncles including Jason (Jessie) Waukau, Tony (Annie) Waukau, Joe (Margaret) Awonohopay, Guy Awonohopay, John (Karol) Awonohopay, Steven (Stephanie) Awonohopay, Deanna Johnson and Dora Hill.
Brian is preceded in death by his brother, Dean, and maternal grandmother, Joan Einertson.
A traditional burial service will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at 1:00 pm at the Zoar Indian Burial Ground. Visitation will be held at the Zoar Ceremonial Building beginning at 1:00 pm Tuesday, January 18, 2022, until the time to leave for the burial ground on Thursday. Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
The family requests that no children under the age of 12 attend the services and masks be worn for everyone's protection.
