Carl "Deacon" Church, age 79, of Bowler, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, in Appleton. He was born on April 26, 1943, to the late Fae Joyce Church in Janesville. Carl was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam conflict from November of 1962 to January of 1967. After the service, he moved home to the Stockbridge Munsee Reservation and held numerous positions within the Stockbridge Munsee Community.  He also worked for Proctor & Gamble before retiring and then for Doc's Harley Davidson as an instructor for 11 years. He enjoyed riding his own Harley motorcycle, gaming, playing video games and going on social media. More than anything, Carl enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. On November 9, 2022, Carl participated in the Veteran's Honor Flight from Appleton to Washington DC. It had been 60 years since he had been in the service and the trip had been a once in a lifetime event.

He was survived by his children, DeAnna (John) DeNasha, Darrin Church, Danny Church, D. Church and Derrick (Connie) Church; thirteen grandchildren, Vanessa, John, Tammy, Cailey, Tony, Brady, Morgan, Ava, Jaden, Brandon, Bradley, Jessica and Kaitlyn; one great-granddaughter, Riezmae, and one on the way.

Carl was preceded in death by his mother and sister, Elsa Kosbab.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, December 12, 2022, at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano. Military rites will be conducted at the funeral home after the service by the Gresham American Legion and the Mohican Veterans. Visitation will be held on Monday at 11:30 am until the time of service at the funeral home.
