Carl "Chummy" Johnson Maskewit, Sr., age 89 of Keshena, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at his home surrounded by family. Carl was born on January 19, 1931, in Keshena, to the late Mitchell and Mary (Beauprey) Maskewit. He went on to serve his country in the United States Army from 1950-1953 during the Korean Conflict. On October 11, 1960, Chummy was united in marriage to Sharon Winneshiek. Sharon preceded him in death in 2006. Chummy was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Keshena. He was a Menominee Tribal Police Officer, Jailer, and Game Warden. Chummy was a Menominee Tribal Police Boxing Coach. He established an honor farm for the Menominee Tribe. Chummy worked with the College of Menominee Nation as a mentor for the edible plants and medicines class. He loved the outdoors, especially riding in the woods, hunting, trapping, and fishing. Chummy made numerous trapping videos for PBS and was featured in National Geographic Magazine.  He also spoke fluent Menominee.

Chummy is survived by his children, Linda Maskewit of Keshena, Mary (Daniel) Tomow, Sr. of Keshena, Sharon Maskewit of Sioux Falls, John (Lynette) Maskewit, Sr. of Keshena, and Mitchell Maskewit, III of Keshena; 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Kathleen. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon; two sons, Carl Jr. and Jacob; one grandchild and one great-grandchild; parents; and siblings, Mitchell, Laura, Elizabeth, Delores, Donald and Dorothy.

Private visitation will be held for Chummy at the Maskewit residence, N276 Max Martin Road in Keshena concluding with military honors.
