Clara June Downing Schmidt, age 84 of Shawano, WI passed away Thursday, August 01, 2013 at her home. Born on May 8, 1929 in Elton, WI she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Alma (Fultz) Mauk. On April 17, 1948 she was united in marriage to Jack Downing in Mt. Pleasant, IN. The couple made their home and raised their family in Losantville, IN and later in Hagerstown, IN. June worked at Abbott's Candy Shop in Hagerstown, IN and was a member of the Harris Chapel Church of the Nazarene in Selma, IN. Jack preceded her in death on April 19, 2001. In 2002 June moved to the Shawano, WI area to be near her sisters. On March 14, 2006 she was united in marriage to Martin Schmidt. June enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, bird watching and traveling with her husband, Martin. June is survived by: her husband, Martin; 3 children, Jim Downing and Jeff Downing of Dallas, TX and Jonita Downing of Mansfield, TX; a daughter-in-law, Kathe Downing of Anderson, CA; step children, Steve (Sharon) Schmidt and Lisa (Billy) McGinnis of Melrose, NM, Jennifer (Terry) Barr and Mike (Wendy) Messenger of Wauconda, IL, Cindy Thomas of Fort Collins, CO, Meredith Umsted of Urbana, OH; 2 brothers, Benny (Mary) Mauk of Elton, WI, Sam (Ronnie) Mauk of Phlox, WI; and 3 sisters, Lorraine Safford of Omaha, NE, Sherri Verburg of Des Moines, WA and Laurie (Jerry) McGee of White Lake, WI. June also leaves behind close friends, Barney and Dorothy Johnson of Losantville, IN and their family. June was preceded in death by: her first husband, Jack; her son, Tim Downing; her parents; a stepmother, Thelma Mauk; 2 sisters, LaVonne (Leonard) Schmidt, Juanita (Art) Swim; and 2 brothers, Glen Mauk and Al (Sylvia) Mauk. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, August 5, 2013 at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano with the Rev. Jim Frank officiating. Burial will be in the Church on the Hill Cemetery in Elton, WI at 2:30pm on Monday.
