Clarence Robert Waelchli, age 90 of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Pine Manor Nursing Home of Embarrass, where he had been a resident for the past 3 months. Born on June 27, 1922 in the Town of Herman, he was the son of the late Fred W. and Elsie I. (Luecke) Waelchli. On November 15, 1942 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Eckhart in Fort Atkinson. After marriage the couple lived on the family dairy farm in the Town of Belle Plaine. In 1972 they built their dream home which they called home ever since. Clarence was very involved in the community as a 4-H leader for Shawano County for more than 55 years. He was the general leader in the Beaver Creek 4-H and Dairy Leader in the Belle 4-H Club. Until just recently, Clarence had been an active member in the Shawano County Historical Society where he held many leadership roles. He was one of the first volunteers for the Shawano County Hospice Program and served on the Shawano County Board of Supervisors. Along with his son, Allan, Clarence ran a Christmas Tree Farm. After his retirement, he worked for NWTC as a farm advisor for the Northeastern counties of Wisconsin for 8 years. Clarence was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church-Stony Hill in the Town of Richmond where he had been baptized and confirmed. Clarence will be deeply missed by: Dorothy, his wife of 70 years; 4 children, Phyllis Brodhagen of Wausau, Judy (Orville) Westphal of Shawano, Betty (LeRoy) Raddant of Shawano, Jean (Milton) Brusewitz of Bonduel; a daughter-in-law, Susan Waelchli of Shawano; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Marie Krause of Clintonville; a foster sister, Kathy (Marlyn) Teetzen of Shawano; a foster brother-in-law, Carl Nelson of AL; and a special care giver, Terrie (Gerald) Timm of Shawano. Clarence was preceded in death by: his son, Allan; a grandson, James Brodhagen; his parents; a sister, Arlene Salzmann; brothers-in-law, Vilas Krause and Lloyd Salzmann; a foster brother, Merlyn "Butch" Blonde; and foster sister, Millie Blonde Nelson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Stony Hill in the Town of Richmond with the Rev. John C. Eyer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano on Friday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the Allan Waelchli Memorial Scholarship, Shawano County Historical Society, Shawano County 4-H or ThedaCare Home Hospice.
