David "Dave" Leon Waupekenay, age 63 of Zoar, began his journey to the spirit world on Sunday, December 13, 2020. David was born on September 7, 1957 to the late Joseph and Cecelia (Neconish) Waupekenay in Keshena. Dave participated in boxing in his youth. Dave was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Beth" Mahkimetas. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Neopit. Dave worked for L&M Trucking, Waupekenay Builders Construction, he was a Police Officer for 13 years, Menominee Tribal Enterprises, Menominee Tribal Jailer, Security Officer at the Menominee Casino, and a Menominee Transit Bus Driver. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time in the woods, and visiting the casino. The most important thing to Dave was spending time with his family. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dave is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth (Mahkimetas) Waupekenay; children, David (Candy) Mahkimetas, Rhonda (James) Corn, Robert (Joyce) Waupekenay, Catherine Waupekenay, Daryl "DJ" Waupekenay, Jesse (Louise) Kaquatosh, Joseph (Delta) Waupekenay, Sawa-Nubkiew (Mary) Waupekenay, and Mashaquit Waupekenay; grandchildren, Kacey, Kyle, Steven, Jordynne, Taylor, Kelsey, Katie Jo, Dariyan, Elizabeth, Jada, Robert Jr., Ian, Loretta, Liam, Alexis, Madelyn, Karson, Kaida, Koda, Aiden, Joseph, Roger, Karleigh, Raymond, Lamar, Lucious, and Clearsky; 11 great-grandchildren, Scarlett, James, Noah, Kendrick, McKenzie, Zaylla, Dani, Barron, Dallas, Carla Mae, and Anakin; siblings, Shelby (Leslie) Kaquatosh of Keshena, Catherine Waukau of Neopit, Mary (Eugene) Jorgenson of Minneapolis, Gordon Waupekenay of Zoar, Ted (Terry) Waupekenay of Middle Village, Steve Waupekenay of Neopit, and Janet (Rosalio) Vital of Neopit. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Cecelia (Neconish) Waupekenay, and siblings, Henry, Robert, Bernard, Joseph, and Patricia.
Visitation will be held at the David and Candy Mahkimetas residence, W2799 LaMotte Family Road, Keshena, beginning at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 until 1:00 pm on Thursday, December 17, 2020. Traditional services will be held during this time. Masks will be required during visitation.
