David M. Shiffer passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. David was born on October 22, 1945, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to Robert and Ione Shiffer. He grew up in Miamisburg, Ohio, on South 7th Street, where he formed lifelong friendships that he cherished throughout his life. It was in Miamisburg that Dave met and married Bonnie Wells in 1967. They moved to Rochester, New York, where Dave began his career with Kodak.
David earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1968 and later obtained his Juris Doctor from Capital University Law School in 1978. That same year, he was admitted to the Ohio Bar, and in 1983, to the Illinois Bar. Over a distinguished legal career spanning 48 years, Dave practiced law in Marysville, Ohio; served in the LaSalle and Will County, Illinois State’s Attorney’s Offices; and later re-entered private practice in Bolingbrook, Illinois.
Dave met Cheryl Harmon, with whom he built a wonderful life. He was active in the Bolingbrook Chorus, a longtime coffee club with close friends, and the Masonic Lodge in Ottawa. Dave and Cheryl spent many cherished years at Legend Lake in Wisconsin. After “seeing if it would work” for 10 years, they were married on February 2, 2008, in a truly unforgettable ceremony on the frozen lake—Dave arriving by snowmobile, friends constructing an ice altar, his granddaughter singing, and a pastor who thought the entire group was just a little crazy.
Dave had a deeply curious mind and a lifelong love of learning. He pursued many interests, including genealogy, archaeology, reading, writing, and tinkering with anything mechanical. He especially loved boating and took great joy in teaching his children and grandchildren how to water ski.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Ione and Robert Shiffer; his brother, Jerry Shiffer; his son, Jamey Shiffer; and his mother-in-law, Bev Harmon.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl Shiffer; his sister, Mary Shiffer; his children: Heather Shiffer Dyer (Christopher) and Robert Shiffer (Michelle); his daughter-in-law, Heidi Shiffer; and his stepchildren: Lori Yates (Mark), Sara Kopecky (Steve), and Erica Linowski (Jason). He additionally had many nieces and nephews whom he loved and cherished. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren (from oldest to youngest): Alex Hernandez (Alexis), Ione Dyer (Seth), Hanna Kopecky, Camille Shiffer, Emma Dyer, Claire Shiffer, Kai Shiffer, Owen Kopecky, Logan Yates, Wyatt Kopecky, Paxton Shiffer, Jayden Linowski, and Carter Linowski; as well as his great-grandchild, Parker Hernandez.
Dave will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, curiosity, and the deep love he had for his family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano with Richard Menning officiating.
