David Lloyd Sutherland passed away July 1, 2014 in Shawano, WI from complications of a brain tumor. Dave was born September 3, 1951 in Lakeview, Michigan and last resided at Canadian Lakes, MI before moving to Shawano in 2012. He was a 1969 graduate of St. Louis High School, with a BA and MA degrees from CMU. Dave was a golf and basketball coach, 5th and 6th grade teacher and elementary principal in the Carson City-Crystal Area Schools for 24 years, then assumed the position of elementary principal in the Breckenridge Community Schools for 5 years. Dave reached the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 15, and as a Boy Scout leader in Crystal, MI, his son Aaron, and 6 other scouts obtained the rank of Eagle under Dave's leadership. He was also the chief supporter of his daughter Liana's softball career starting when she was in grade school all the way through her 4 years at Northwood University. Dave was an avid golfer (scoring a hole-in-one in 1970) and developed the hobby of making and repairing golf clubs. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, taking an annual fishing trip to Esnagi Lake, cross country skiing, hiking, motorcycling, bowling, reading, and gardening with his father. He was a member of the St. Louis & Carson City Methodist Churches, Gratiot Country Club, the Hubbardston, Crystal, and Breckenridge Masons, and the Stanwood Eagles. Dave is survived by: his children, Aaron and Stacy (Heitman) Sutherland of Clinton Twp., MI, Liana Sutherland of Port Huron, MI; granddaughters, Kate Lynne and Grace Marie Sutherland of Clinton Twp.; father Lloyd Sutherland of Morley, MI; siblings, Linda (Mike) Chrzanowski of Shepherd, MI, Mary (Dan) Doepker of St. Louis, MI, Wayne (Cindy) Sutherland of Morley; his partner, Ann Morgan of Shawano; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother Patricia in 2006 and dear friend Mike Fernandez in 2002. A celebration of Dave's life will be held for family and friends at the Remus Bowling Center, 356 W. Wheatland Ave., Remus, MI on Saturday, July 12 from 1:00-5:00pm. Golf casual is expected!!
