It is with heavy hearts, we share the news that our beloved grief therapy dog, Dazzy, was called to heaven earlier than we had hoped, after her unsuccessful battle with a failing liver. In July of 2019, we welcomed her with joy, into our family, when she was five months old… her deep brown eyes, seemingly capable of looking directly into your soul. Upon arriving from Ultimate Canine in Indiana with her trainer, we set out on the week-long training, as certified handlers, learning 23 commands, including, but not limited to, snuggle, sit, stay, leave it, settle, and knuckles (her version of shake), which was probably her favorite because it resulted in more treats than any other command. We were eager to share her love with the community, who we consider extended family. Dazzy’s mild manner, sweet disposition, funny, but sometimes frustrating quirks… such as eating used tissues out of the garbage or the praying mantis leaping in excitement, will be dearly missed.
She comforted many, often bringing a smile to the lips of those most in need. Dazzy companioned families during arrangements, prearrangements, “Understanding Your Grief” classes, visitations, funerals, career fairs, the “Sources of Strength” day at Shawano Community High School and occasional nursing home visits. Her day-to-day happenings in the office always consisted of frequent naps, lots of pets, treats after a long day, walks outside during nice weather and spending much time with her work family even when she got her beautiful white fur all over their pants. Dazzy's job was to show support to grieving families, but she was also a dog at heart at the end of her “shift” she would go home take her vest off, run around in the woods chasing squirrels, playing in the water and snow, wanting to be a part of the conversation when the landline phone rang at home, barking at the deer and loving her big extended family during family get togethers.
