Obituary

Donnie A. Miller, age 70, of Bowler, passed away following a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at his home surrounded by loved ones. Donnie was born on July 12, 1949, in Shawano, to the late Corlyss "Cy" and Lucille "Cille" (Bowman) Miller. He graduated from Bowler High School in 1968. On August 28, 1971, in Bowler, Donnie was united in marriage to Chris Marten. He lived in the Bowler area all of his life. Donnie worked for Shawano Municipal Utilities for over 38 years, retiring as a foreman. He was very artistic and his creative abilities inspired him in creating the SMU logo which is still used today. He is a devoted member of the Church of the Wilderness where he served on several committees. Donnie also served on the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribal Council as well as several other tribal boards. He was extremely proud of his Native American heritage and always made a point to treat others as he wanted to be treated. Donnie enjoyed hunting especially spring turkey season, also collecting antique clocks, knives, pocket watches, as well old tractors. He especially enjoyed his time with his family and friends, enjoying stories around the campfire, making maple syrup, and attending auctions. Donnie will be remembered by all for his love of dancing especially by his dancing partner Chris.

Donnie is survived by: his wife of 48 years, Chris; his children, Chad Miller and Todd (Sara) Miller; four grandchildren, Ashley, Brandon, Austin, and Mikayla; one great-grandson, Jerritt II; his siblings, Doug "Grumby" (Chenda) Miller, Averil "Jayne" Pecore, Leland (Sue) Miller, Greg (Linda) Miller, and Bud (Carmen) Miller; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eddie (Pat) Marten, Dave Marten, Sally (Bernie) Fuller, and Allen "Buzz" Marten. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service will be held for Donnie at 11:00 am, on Thursday, September 26, 2019, at the Church of the Wilderness with Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Stockbridge Indian Burial Grounds. Visitation will be held at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm, and again on Thursday at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service.

The family of Donnie would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Turnbull, Dr. Peterson, and Dr. Plata and their respective staff, and all of the staff of the Volm Cancer Center in Antigo.
