Doris M. Hammes, age 84 of Gresham, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2012 at her home surrounded by her family. Born on April 2, 1927 in the Town of Herman, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Louise (Viergutz) Ringel. On November 12, 1955 she was united in marriage to George Hammes in Milwaukee. The couple made their home in the Milwaukee area where Doris worked as a cook for the Milwaukee Public School System for more than 25 years. After retirement, Doris moved to the Gresham area where she became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. In her free time she enjoyed playing cards, reading, and doing crafts but her greatest joy was the time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other family members and friends. Doris is survived by: 2 daughters, Gail Hoffman of Gresham, Debbie (Carl) Hoffman of Shawano; 6 grandchildren, Sara (Nate), Elliot, Katie (Jason), Stacy, Michael, Eric; and 5 great-grandchildren, Jackson, Cooper, Callie, Peyten and Blake. Doris is further survived by: 2 sisters, Marilyn Rudesill, Yvonne (Bob) Miller; 4 sisters-in-law, Glenna (Ken) Kahl, Joyce Stolga, Dorothy Ringel, Hattie Pettis; and 4 brothers-in-law, Jerry Hammes, Paul Hammes, Clyde Schmidt and Keith Rudesill. Doris was preceded in death by: her husband, George on April 16, 1978; her parents; a son-in-law, Vern Hoffman, Jr.; 2 sisters, Phyllis Genskow, Margie Schmidt; 2 brothers, Russell And Victor Ringel; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gresham with the Rev. John C. Eyer and the Rev. Richard R. Buhrke officiating. Burial will be in the Wisconsin Memorial Park in Milwaukee. Visitation will be held at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Gresham on Monday from 4-8pm and at the church on Tuesday from 10am until the time of the service. www.swedbergfuneralhome.com
