Obituary

Doris J. "Granny" Spates, age 74 of Bonduel passed away Sunday, October 16, 2011. God picked the most beautiful flower to be in heaven, our Granny. Born on June 6, 1937 in Germantown, MD, she was the daughter of the late David and Alma (Burrier) Gernand. Granny farmed most of her life and then retired from Outlook Graphics in Neenah after working there for 10 years. She was such a hardworking lady who would do anything for anybody. She was also an amazing cook. When it was your birthday, you knew you'd be receiving one of Granny's homemade pies or cakes, which were baked with love from Granny. She loved the simple things in life, like watching the birds especially yellow finches and Baltimore Orioles, tending to her flowers which were everywhere in her yard, watching the Green Bay Packer and Milwaukee Brewer games, and the abundance of love, laughter, and smiles which came from her children and grandchildren. Doris also had a love for animals that was very evident. Her faithful companion, "Junior", a black lab, was always by her side. Doris is survived by: 8 children, Richard Spates of Bonduel, Barbara "Sissy" Ahalt of Clear Spring, MD, William "Bill" (Patty) Spates of Clear Spring, MD, Robert Spates, Jr. of Bonduel, Clarence "Bud" (special friend, Candy Krejci) Spates of Bonduel, Patti (Grant) Christianson of Navarino, Carol (Dan) Knipp of Shawano, David (Carrie) Spates of Bonduel; and a very close friend, Lynn Roff, who was thought to be more like a daughter than a friend. Doris was loved very much by her 20 grandchildren, Chrissy, Joey, Amy, Lindsay, Erica, Becky, Katie, Denny, Brad, Jenny, Holly, Marcus, BJ, Jeremy, Erin, Sam, Jesse, Maggie, Lily and Hailey; 19.5 great-grandchildren; and 1 brother, Robert Gernand of Woodsboro, MD. Doris was preceded in death by: a granddaughter; her parents; and former husband, Robert Spates. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, October 21, 2011 at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in the Town of Lessor with the Rev. Michael Dismer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Swedberg-Wendt Funeral Home in Bonduel on Thursday from 4-6:30pm and at the church on Friday after 10am until the time of the service. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Andrews-Fike and the staff at the Shawano Medical Center for the care given to Doris.
