Obituary

Doris J. Steichen, age 89 of Shawano, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at Evergreen Nursing Home in Shawano, while surrounded by her family.  Doris was born in Streator, Illinois on January 6, 1931, to the late Clarence and Hazel (Scudder) Kline.  After attending Dwight Township Schools and graduating in 1949, she was united in marriage to William Steichen on October 7, 1950, at the Steichen family farm in Round Grove Township, Livingston County, IL. They made their home in Dwight, raising their first of five children, until 1960 when her husband's job took the family to Shawano.  After her fifth child was born, she decided to enter into a new phase of her life, becoming a Fuller Brush sales-person.  Although this was a very interesting part of her life, she was asked to become Head of Housekeeping at the new Evergreen Nursing Home in Shawano.  She was in charge of all of house-keeping duties, ordering supplies for the facility, as well as all nursing supplies.  Some of her practices and policies are still in place today.  She spent nearly 25 years as an employee at Evergreen, and her final 1 ½ years as a resident… often telling the staff, "How we used to do things!"

Doris was an avid Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Bucks, and golf fan.  While vacationing on her many trips to Florida with her husband, the couple attended several PGA golf events.  Among her other interests, she enjoyed attending auctions, especially Amish quilts auctions, collecting antiques, and snowmobiling.  She and Bill were at the start of the Lund's Snowbirds Snowmobile Club - numerous miles were driven, and many trips were taken, with several of their dear friends.  At the center of her life was family - with many family get-togethers, fish fry's, or get-togethers just to share a story or two, over a couple of brandy old-fashioneds, which only took a couple of phone calls to spread the word.  All of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her, and Doris was extremely proud of each one.

Doris is survived by: her children, Bob (Geri) Steichen of Cecil, Barbara Wawrzyn of Green bay, Brent (special friend, Jan Raddant) Steichen of Shawano, and Brian Steichen of Shawano; 12 grandchildren, Rob (Tina Meyers) Steichen, Brad (Amber Fellenz) Steichen, Ann (Mike) Jacobson, Amy (Derek ) Erickson, Jason (Mindy) Steichen, Jennifer Steichen, Jeff (Laura) Steichen, Amber (Nick) Bystol, Cassie Steichen, Jamie Steichen, Stacy (Andy) Hooyman and Steffany (Aaron) Villalobos; 10 great-grandchildren, Sophia, Tyler, Drew, Zach, JJ, Macee, Danny, Aiden, Lily, and Jayce.  She is further survived by her brother-in-law, Richard (Beverly) Steichen of Sun City, AZ, and her sister-in-law, Martha (Joe) Polito of Joliet, IL.

She is preceded in death by: her husband, Bill; her son, Alan; son-in-law, Mark T. Wawrzyn; her parents, Clarence and Hazel; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Nina Steichen.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, private family services will be held.
