Dorothy E. Berndt, age 93 of the Town of Richmond, was called home by her Savior on Wednesday, August 24, 2011. Born on March 29, 1918 in Shawano, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Sophia (Staub) Lemhouse. On November 16, 1940 she was united in marriage to Waldemar Berndt at the St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. After graduating from Shawano High School, Dorothy went through a one-year teacher training program. This would prove to be the start of a 37-year teaching career for her. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education Degree from the University of WI-Stevens Point in 1965. It was always rewarding for her to have former students tell her how much they appreciated her as a teacher. She served students and their families in many different settings while teaching in one room schoolhouses throughout the rural Shawano area as well as different primary grades at St. James Lutheran School, Keshena Grade School and Olga Brener School. Dorothy was very active in a number of organizations including Delta Kappa Gamma, the Shawano Lake County Republican Women's Association, the Shawano Retired Teachers Association, the St. James Ladies Aid, and the St. James Altar Guild. She also volunteered at the Shawano County Library and was a greeter at St. James Lutheran Church. Although Dorothy was very active in these organizations, her family and her relationship with her Savior Jesus Christ were the focal points in her life. Recently Dorothy received the Living Treasure Award from the Shawano Historical Society. Dorothy is survived by: her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Frank Wegner; 3 grandsons and their spouses, Timothy & MJ Wegner, Todd & Stephanie Wegner, Tony & Robin Wegner; 8 great-grandchildren, Jennifer (Josh) VanKauwenberg, Jason (Mindy) Wegner, Kristofor Kellogg, Bradley Wegner, Brandon Wegner, Keaton Wegner, Kailee Wegner, Tyler Wegner; and a great great-granddaughter, Brynn VanKauwenberg. Dorothy is further survived by: a sister, Shirley (Ted) Naumann of Punta Gorda, FL; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Koeller of Shawano; and 14 nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by: her husband of 56 years, Waldemar; her parents; 5 brothers, Dan, Ben, Fred, George and Robert Lemhouse; and a sister, Margaret Lemhouse. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, August 29, 2011 at the St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano with the Rev. Ted Andrada officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday after 9am until the time of the service. Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano is assisting the family with the arrangements. Dorothy's confirmation verse was very fitting for her: "Be Thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." Revelation 2:10
