Obituary

Dorothy Ann “Dotsie” (Winneshiek) Smith, age 79, of Neopit, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at her home surrounded by her family. Dotsie was born on January 28, 1947, in Keshena to the late Frank and Jane (O’Kimosh) Winneshiek. Her first language was Menominee and with her sister, Cynthia, they would go to people’s homes and prisons to teach the language. On August 19, 1964, she was united in marriage to Joseph Smith. During the day you could catch Dotsie watching her “daytime tv” Price is Right, Young and the Restless, Bold and the Beautiful and Let’s Make a Deal, in that order. Dotsie enjoyed playing bingo, slots, 10,000 and rummy. She loved to cook and made sure anyone who stopped over helped themselves with whatever she cooked for dinner, especially her famous baked beans and chili. Dotsie was very family oriented, taking care of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She earned the nickname “Country Gramz” from her grandson, Aaron Smith. Her love for all her family was something fierce, which matched her feisty but most of all loving personality. Dotsie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend; she will be deeply missed.

Dotsie is survived by her husband of 62 years, Joseph; children, Frank “Joe” (Raquel Escalante) Smith, Jessica “Tacos” Smith, Shelley (Greg) Smith and Lisa Smith; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and special niece, Candy Boyd. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dotsie is preceded in death by her son, Michael “Mike” Smith; one great-grandchild; siblings, Edwardine (“Suds”), Cynthia, Judy, Randy, Sharon (Jan) and Mary; and parents, Frank and Jane Winneshiek.

Funeral services will be posted soon.
