Elaine Mae Darling, age 79 of Shawano, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2012 in Green Bay. Elaine was born in the Town of Richmond on September 12, 1932 to the late Julius and Lenora (Jesse) Habeck. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul Lutheran Church-Stony Hill. She graduated from Shawano High School in 1950 and started working at Badger Breeders the next day. She met Lloyd Darling while he was home on leave from the U.S. Navy and the couple was married on December 15, 1956 at St. Paul-Stony Hill. After marriage, Elaine continued working on and off at Badger Breeder for the next 20 years, only taking time off to raise children. In 1973 she was hired as the first secretary at the Shawano Police Department which later led to Dispatching and then led to being the personal secretary to the Chief of Police. After more than 25 years at the Police Department, she retired in 1997. After retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling and going south in the winter with Elaine's brother, Leland and his wife, Sandy. The couple also traveled west with Lloyd's sister, Orla and her husband, Dan. They also both enjoyed gambling. Lloyd preceded her in death on September 29, 2008. Elaine loved her family, enjoyed cooking and baking for them and showing her grandchildren how to bake. She also enjoyed spending time with her son, Joe and his family, helping out in their business. She was a member of the St. Jakobi Lutheran Church where she attended Bible Study and was active with the Ladies Aide and the LWML. Elaine was also a member of the Shawano American Legion Auxiliary and was a past member of Cabana 986. Elaine is survived by: her 5 children, Kim (Roger) Rieck of Eau Claire, Julie (Richard) Buss of West Bend, Joel (Pam) Darling of Sheboygan, James (Jean) Darling of Shawano, Vicki (Mike) Waldvogel of Shawano; 10 grandchildren, Amanda (Brian) Wozniak of Chicago, Andrew Buss of West Bend, Tasha (Brenden) Baber of Elkhorn and Paul Rieck of Eau Claire, Erica Darling of Sheboygan, Jesse and Jade Waldvogel of Shawano; Daniel Darling, Patrick and Jonathon Christopherson of Shawano; 2 great-grandchildren, Katherine Wozniak and Asa Baber; and 3 brothers, Roger (Shirley) Habeck of Seymour, Leland (Sandy) Habeck of Shawano and Dave (Barb) Habeck of Shawano. Elaine was preceded in death by: her husband, Lloyd; her parents; and a brother, Vernal Habeck. Funeral services will be held at 1:00p.m. on Friday, September 14, 2012 at the St. Jakobi Lutheran Church in the Town of Richmond with the Rev. Travis Kleinschmidt officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday after 10:00a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family asks that donations be made to the St. Jakobi Building Fund.
