Emil Edward Kriewaldt, age 79, passed away Monday, October 08, 2012 in Shawano. Born on December 20, 1932 in Shawano, he was the son of the late Gilbert J. and Loretta A. (Wolf) Kriewaldt. After graduating from Concordia High School in Milwaukee, Emil furthered his education with a BS degree in the spring of 1955 from Concordia Teacher's College in Seward, NE and a Masters Degree in teaching in 1967 from Northern Illinois University. While still attending college, Emil started his career by teaching children in a one room school near Red Wing, MN. Over the next few years, he would teach, be principal, organist, choir director and coach for a few other schools, ultimately taking a position teaching mathematics at the Hawthorn Junior High School in Mundelein, IL. On June 12, 1954 he was united in marriage to Yvonne P. Beyer at the St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. The couple made their home in Mundelein where they raised their five children. In 1961 the family purchased the Dairy Queen in Mundelein and successfully ran it for the next 39 years. Emil was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, a member of the Illinois Principals' Association, Shawano Co. Arts Council, and on the Board of Directors at the Box in the Woods Theater Guild where he was active as a director, actor and set-builder. After returning to the Shawano area, the couple became members of the St. Paul Lutheran Church-Stony Hill where Emil served as president from 2007-2012. In his free time, he enjoyed making maple syrup, hunting, fishing and participating in all facets of the theater. Emil is survived by: his loving wife of 58 years, Yvonne; his 5 children, Greg (Ann) Kriewaldt, Kay (Dan) Cullen, Gwen (Alan) Andrea, Marc (Kristin DeSantis) Kriewaldt, Joy Kriewaldt; 8 grandchildren, Fred Sanchez, Richard and Benjamin Graham, Dana, Amy and Justin Andrea, Storm and Steel Wolf; a sister, Eileen Treichel of CO; and a sister-in-law, Karen (Dave) Pieper of Shawano. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church-Stony Hill with the Rev. John C. Eyer officiating. Visitation will be held at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano on Thursday from 5-8pm and at the church on Friday after 10am until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Willow Lawn Memorial Park in Mundelein, IL on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 12:00 noon.
