Ernestine Evalyn "Ernie" Murphy, age 97 of Bowler, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2019 surrounded by her family at the Ella Besaw Center. Ernestine was born in Morgan Siding, Shawano County, WI on November 5, 1921 to the late Glen and Melissa (Fowler) Quinney. She attended school in Flandreau, South Dakota and worked in the Black Hills during the summers. Ernestine served our country as a Marine from 1943 until 1945. On November 20, 1945, Ernestine was united in marriage to Virgil J. Murphy in the Town of Red Springs. He preceded her in death on December 6, 2009. Ernestine, who worked as an EMT and Community Health Rep, was very active in the Stockbridge-Munsee community. She enjoyed trout fishing, gardening, picking berries and spending time with her grandchildren. Ernestine was a member of Old Stockbridge Presbyterian Church, the Mary Martha Society and the Stockbridge-Munsee Veterans.
Ernestine is survived by: three children, Penny (Jack) Jashinsky of Bowler, Pamela (Andrew) Shaw of St. Louis and SuAnne (Randy) Vannatter of Tomahawk; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; one son, Michael; two great great-grandchildren; her parents; and her siblings, Earl, Elmer, Verne, Ardis and Alice.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Old Stockbridge Presbyterian Church in Bowler with Rev. Micah Shin and Rev. Mick Knierim. Military honors will be conducted by the Stockbridge-Munsee Veterans and the Gresham American Legion Post #390. Burial will be in the church cemetery in spring. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 am until the time of the service.
