Florence Mae (Phalen) Schmidt, age 94 of Shawano, met her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, after a life full of love and family.  She was born in Shawano on May 27, 1927, to the late John and Dagmar (Sorensen) Phalen.  She attended Shawano High School and worked for years at Spurgeon's creating the merchandise displays in the front window facing Main Street.  Florence was united in marriage to Norman A. Schmidt on July 23, 1949, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano.   The couple was married for over 45 years before Norman's passing.  Together they created many happy memories for their children and grandchildren; from Friday night pizzas to playing records on the stereo to keep their grandchildren dancing in the living room.

Florence volunteered her time at Sacred Heart Catholic Parish and always celebrated the annual Schmidt Cookie Bake with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren each December, where hundreds of cookies would be made, and dozens of rounds of Sheepshead would be played.  She loved when her Rockstead nieces would visit, especially when Pam would make the entire room laugh.

Florence is survived by: her son, Michael (Linda) Schmidt; her daughters, Sue (Tom) Porath and Linda (Michael) Griesbach; grandchildren, Tracy Porath, Jason (Courtney) Schmidt, Michael, Jr. (Jennifer) Griesbach, Tiffany (Nicholas Olson) Porath, Brian (Melanie Carrigan) Schmidt, Jennifer Griesbach, and Tomissa (David) Freisleben; great-grandchildren, Ashley Griesbach, Aubriella Schmidt, Brayden Schmidt, Nicole Griesbach, and Henry Freisleben; and step-grandchildren, David (Micki), Greg (Cheryl) and Tom Sylvester.  She is further survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman A. Schmidt; parents, John and Dagmar Phalen; and her siblings, George, Mary Ann, and John Jr.

A funeral mass will be held for Florence at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Scott Valentyn officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday at the church from 9:30 am until the time of service.
