IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Florian Charles
"Van" Van Dyck
February 29, 1924 – January 20, 2024
On January 20, 2024, our merciful God took Florian "Van" Van Dyck from his earthly home to sing with God's angels. We thank God for the blessing of Van's life. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and one brother.
Van was a loving husband, father grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. He is survived by his five children, eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Van was born in Green Bay, WI, to John and Ellen (Brockman) Van Dyck. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1942. He enlisted in the Army in June of 1943, served in the Pacific Theater, and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in January of 1946. Van was also a member of an American Legion Post. In 1947, he graduated from Green Bay Badger Business college.
Van married Mary Holz on May 26, 1951, and they had five children: Kathy (Steve) Zais, Gretchen, Mary Beth (Kent) Potterton, Julie and Paul. After the death of Mary, he married Susan Gage.
Van began his working career in Green Bay with Standard Oil, Kraft Foods and then Charmin. In 1959, he accepted an office manager's job at Badger Breeders Cooperative (Genex). Three years later he became the financial director/manager and was elected as treasurer by the board of directors. Van then served as the president of the National Society of Cooperative Accountants and remained with the cooperative until his retirement in 1989.
Van also served his community in many ways through his involvement in the American Red Cross, Shawano County Hospital Board and church trusteeship. He was instrumental in getting a United Way chapter started in Shawano, which surpassed everyone's expectations.
Besides Van's love of family and community, everyone knew he was an avid Packers fan. He was a Packers ticket holder since the Packers played at City Stadium. His other passion that never wavered was music. Thankfully he was willing to share his God given gift of a beautiful tenor voice with all of us. Van's greatest pleasure was to sing anytime and anyplace! He was a member of the Barbershop choir and loved entertaining at local nursing homes, weddings, funerals, birthdays, restaurants, and of course at the Don Cesar in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Van's more recent fans were the residents and staff at the senior living facility where he was residing during the last five years of his glorious life.
A memorial mass for Van will be at 11:30 am held on Friday May 17, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Looney officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Unity Hospice of Green Bay and our local VFW Scholarships.
