Floyd C. "Twig" Hartwig, age 92, of Shawano, passed away on January 10, 2020 surrounded by his family. Floyd was born in Gresham, on April 24, 1927, to Leonard "Shorty" and Dorothy (Fischer) Hartwig. Twig proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart. On July 5, 1951, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano, Twig was united in marriage to Valda Miller, who preceded him death on February 5, 2007. The couple called Shawano their home, and blessed the residents by starting Twig's Beverages in 1951, including Sun Drop, the liquid gold of Shawano. Twig gave back to his community as a member of the VFW, DAV, American Legion Post #117, 40 & 8, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Knights of Columbus, Shawano Eagles Club, Shawano Rotary, Shawano Masonic Lodge #170, York Rite and Scottish Rite, Beja Temple, Beja Shrine Clown, known as "Twig", for over 30 years.
He is survived by his children, Kenneth (Paula) Hartwig, Sherry (Floyd) Pluger, Dan (Diane) Hartwig and Cathy (Joe) Shegonee; his grandchildren, Julie, Shanen, Dominick, Lucas, Jacob and Benjamin; his great-grandchildren, Megan, Aiden, Parker, Emma, Dice and Nash; his sister, Carol Yaeger, his brother-in-law, John Poris; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
Twig was preceded in death by his wife, Valda; his parents, Leonard and Dorothy; and his sister, Rose "Tooty" Poris.
A funeral mass for Floyd will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Fr. Scott Valentyn officiating. Masonic services will be held on Friday, January 17, 2020 at Swedberg Funeral Home at 7:00 pm. Entombment will be in Sacred Heart Mausoleum, with military honors conducted by the Shawano VFW and Shawano American Legion Post #117. Visitation will be held on Friday at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. A memorial fund is being established by the family.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Brian Schultz, who brought Twig his weekly hamburger, The Cottages, Heartland Hospice, Shawano Health Services, and the unending stream of visitors, who enjoyed visiting with Twig.
