Dr. Franklyn T. Bergmann, also known as Tom, 81, of Shawano, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 1, 2017.
Tom was born on July 13, 1935, in Madison, Wisconsin to Franklyn and Pauline (Kundert) Bergmann. A graduate of Madison West High School, Tom entered medical school at the University of Wisconsin Madison. That is where he met his future wife Kathleen (Urick) Bergmann. They were united in marriage on June 16, 1956. Upon completing his medical residency, Tom entered the Air Force Medical Corps and honorably served his country. Upon completing his military commitment, he settled in Shawano, Wisconsin and established his private medical practice.
As a general practitioner, Tom provided internal medicine, family, surgical, and obstetrical care for over 30 years to the Shawano and surrounding communities as a member of the Marsh, Cantwell-Peterson, and Theda Care Clinics. Keeping his black medical bag nearby, Tom was always available to assist his family, neighbors, and community at large. Former patients remember him as the doctor they loved or "the doctor who delivered me".
Tom enjoyed many hobbies and interests, especially outdoor activities. Known as "Bergie" to his close friends, he enjoyed many boating and snowmobile excursions. However, his greatest joy was sharing fishing and tubing experiences with his family, bicycling with his grandchildren to the local ice cream shop, and showing off his model railroad and sailing ships. A lifelong Packers and Badgers fan he spent many weekends cheering on his favorite teams.
Tom had a great sense of humor and will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved spending time with his family, which included many beloved canine companions and ensured that they were well taken care of.
Tom is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen; his son and daughter Tom (Lisa) Bergmann of Shawano, Wisconsin and Christine (Brett) Helgeson of Shorewood, Minnesota; twelve grandchildren: Chase Bergmann, Bailey (Erich) Steger, Christian Bergmann, Bethany (Aidan) Durie, Hannah Bergmann, Sarah Bergmann, Joshua Bergmann, Daniel Bergmann, Caroline Bergmann, Ryan Helgeson, Benjamin Helgeson, and Marianna Helgeson, and one great grandchild Ella Durie.
A private family ceremony will be held at a future date with Pastor Joel Smith officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please direct any memorials to the Dr. Franklyn T. Bergmann Memorial Fund in care of Swedberg Funeral Home. Please share online condolences at
