Bergeon

Frieda M. Bergeon, age 95, of Shawano, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2020. Frieda was born on April 2, 1925, in Neopit, the daughter of the late Morris and Florence (Crowe) Dickenson. Frieda was a determined person and her passion in life was to help the Native American people, especially those on the Menominee Reservation, her homeland. She served in the "We Indians Program", received a certification for the valuable contribution to the Wisconsin American Indian Science Fairs, contributed many years and countless hours of service in the Milwaukee community during the 1970's and 1980's, received her engineer's license to perform the duties of a low pressure boiler operator, and became an Executive Officer, as the V.P. of D.R.U.M.S. (Determination, Rights, and Unity of Menominee Stockholders). Frieda drove a bus along with a caravan of others to Washington D.C. to witness the hearing and testimonials of Menominee Termination and Restoration Acts, marched 220 miles, along with her children, from Keshena to Madison on October 2 nd , 1971 for the D.R.U.M.S. March for Justice, defended, supported, and protected the Menominee Warriors Society in 1975 during the Alexian Brother's Novitiate takeover. At the age of 50, Frieda attended the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, graduating in 1980, won the UW Milwaukee "Gest Program Award", and earned Master level training at UW Stout. In 1983, she was named Wisconsin Indian Woman of the year by Shenabe Quai as well as the Wisconsin Indian Woman's Recognition Award from the Positive Indian Development Center in the Greater Milwaukee area. She then moved her family to their ancestral homeland of the Menominee Indian Reservation. She was an elected official of the Menominee Tribal Legislature from 1994 to 1998, formed the first Menominee Elder Council, received the Bureau of Justice 2006 National Training conference for Criminal Justice and Community Leader Certification, and led the elder delegation to Washington D.C. to witness Menominee Tribe vs. United States, known as the "Termination Case". She represented the Menominee on the Wisconsin Judi care Board, holding two terms of two years each, was a teacher and tutor at the Menominee Indian School District. Frieda possesses and shares the skill of traditional Menominee basket weaving and even has some baskets displayed in Washington D.C. and the National congress of the American Indians for all to see. Frieda loves reading, especially about the history of the Wisconsin Tribes and federally recognized tribes, but most of all enjoys reading the Menominee Tribe.
Frieda is survived by: her children, Dudley Britton Wright III of Florida, Glenn Bergeon of Hatley, Gail Packard of Keshena, Matthew Bergeon of Keshena and Dana Bergeon of Keshena; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by: one son, Christopher; her parents; her brothers, Floyd, Clarence, and Kenneth; her sisters, Vivian, Sylvia, and Celestine; and a son-in-law, Neal Packard.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
