Obituary

Gary L. Petersen, age 73, passed away on Friday November 14, 2025, in Green Bay. Gary was born on October 9, 1952, in Racine, Wisconsin to the late Robert and Hertha (Helmle) Petersen. He was with his life partner, Rodney Wojtysiak for over 30 years; together they were united in marriage on December 3, 2014, in Shawano. Gary was a creative force in the Department of City Development where he hosted foreign dignitaries and traveled around the country for the City of Milwaukee. He was a supportive and loving son and brother.

Gary was a person of deep passion for art, culture, and nature, he would move through the world with a rare blend of kindness and creative energy. His artistic spirit spans many mediums and was only limited by his imagination. He would find inspiration in the textures of everyday life, from vibrant cultural traditions to the quiet beauty of natural landscapes, transforming these influences into works that feel both intimate and universal. Guided by empathy and curiosity, Gary could create not just art, but moments of meaning that invite others to see the world with fresh eyes.

Rodney and Gary shared a deep love for travel, especially their trips to New York to enjoy Broadway shows. Through all their adventures and explorations, they discovered a special fondness for Florida, where they eventually chose to spend their winters. With Gary's grandparents having once owned a farm in the Shawano area, the region already held a sense of familiarity and connection. In time, Rodney and Gary planted their own roots there, embracing Shawano as the place they would proudly call home.

Gary is survived by his husband, Rodney; sisters, Susan Petersen and Ruthann (Terry) Liegler; and many friends and family.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Patient Pines Assisted Living and St. Croix Hospice.
