, 2016, George Albert Schmidt, Jr., 83, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the son of George, Sr., and Leona Schmidt of Gresham. George (Bud) graduated from Gresham High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany, where he was promoted to Corporal, and was in charge of Infantry. He and his brother, Dan, both served in Germany and were able to spend time together overseas.
Upon returning home, George moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he worked for American Motors, serviced sewing machines, and worked as a welder for S&M Manufacturing. He met the love of his life, Charlotte E. Harris of Hurley, Wisconsin. They were united in marriage on September 12, 1959, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ironwood, Michigan.
George persuaded Charlotte to move to the country to become a farm wife. They bought a small farm in Bowler, Wisconsin, in 1961. George's farming ambitions led him to move the family, now with children Robert and Lori, to a larger farm in Belle Plaine, Wisconsin. Greg was born to complete the family.
George was a long-time member of the American Legion, post #390. He was named Outstanding Young Farmer in 1969, earned the Honorary Chapter Farmer Award from Shawano High School and earned annual High Quality Milk awards from the National Farm Organization (NFO). The highlight of his career was co-hosting Farm Progress Days in 1989, a Wisconsin farm event drawing 150,000 spectators over the course of three days.
George was an avid reader, which kept him well-schooled in the latest techniques of dairy and land productivity. He was truly one of the lucky individuals who absolutely loved his work, and passed that on to his sons, Bob and Greg.
George will be remembered by all who knew him as a humble, soft-spoken man. He was never boastful or critical, always speaking kind words about others. He loved Charlotte, his children, and his six grandchildren. He was always so happy to host family gatherings. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.
