Gerald "Jerry" Francis Hawpetoss, age 63, of Neopit, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. Jerry was born in Keshena on October 31, 1952, son of the late Samuel and Frances (Matchapatow) Hawpetoss, Sr. He was a dedicated member of the Big Drum religion throughout his life. Jerry was a unique and powerful champion traditional dancer, well known throughout Indian country. In 1992 he received the NEA National Heritage Fellowship Award as an outstanding traditional moccasin maker, a master of bead work and feather work, as well as a maker of traditional Menominee dance regalia. He also enjoyed being a cultural educator, teaching the Menominee language, drumming, and singing at the Menominee Indian School District, the Indian Community School in Milwaukee and the Circle of Nations School in Wahpeton, North Dakota.
Jerry is survived by his children, Eric Hawpetoss of Keshena, Erica Hawpetoss of Keshena, and Delaney Hawpetoss of Appleton; five grandchildren, Brandan Cloud, Jr., Danah Cloud, Dancia Hawpetoss, Bradley "Sonny Bear" Charley, and Jerrick Dale Hawpetoss. He is further survived by two sisters, Rebecca Hawpetoss of Keshena and Judy (Pete Shawanokasic) Hawpetoss of Keshena; one brother, Sam "Lam" Hawpetoss, Jr. of Keshena; the mothers of his children, Margie Charley and Kate Keshena as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son, Danah Hawpetoss, his parents, one sister, Nina, and three brothers, Glenn, Dale, and John.
Traditional services will be held at the Zoar Ceremonial Building from 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 until 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 22, 2016. Mr. Joey Awonohpay will be the officiant. Burial will be in the Zoar Burial Grounds. Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
