Obituary

Harold E. "Harry" Strauss, age 101 of the Town of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at a local nursing home. Born on December 27, 1911 in Shawano, he was the son of the late Franz and Martha (Giese) Strauss. In his younger years, Harry farmed with his father and would deliver milk by horse and wagon in the Shawano area for his father's RestAcre Dairy. He later became a pilot, owning several planes and would fly stunt planes at the Wausau Air Show in the 1930's. On November 4, 1950 he was united in marriage to Anita Johnson. The couple would celebrate 58 years of marriage before her death on December 5, 2008. Harry made his living as a carpenter and built the house that the couple lived in located at the mouth of the Red River. Once while building a home in Oconto County, Harry would fly his plane up to work on it and land in a nearby field. Anita, however, was not aware of such travels. When not working, Harry loved to bow and gun hunt, especially in northern Wisconsin, Montana and Idaho. He also loved fishing and took many trips to Canada with his friends from Campbellsport, Shawano and Rochester, MN. He also had several harrowing experiences while fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Harry also loved to go on cruises with Anita and never passed an opportunity to invite his siblings and their families over for a visit. Later in life, he once stated that on more than 20 different occasions his life was held in balance, but was saved because "The Lord must love fools." Harry lived in the home he built until last month because of the amazing help from his grand-niece, Jessica Weiland and her family. Their care and dedication to Harry is greatly appreciated. Harry is survived by: a sister, Betty Rae (Randall) Schmidt of Shawano; and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Harry was preceded in death by: his wife, Anita; his parents; and 8 siblings, Leona Rusch, Walter Strauss, Lester Strauss, Edward Strauss, Isla Wudtke, Franklin Strauss, Lula Teetzen and Doris Allhiser. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Peace United Church of Christ in Shawano with the Rev. Marty Black officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday starting at 9:30am until the time of the service. Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano is assisting the family with the arrangements. www.swedbergfuneralhome.com
