Obituary

Henry L. Berner, Jr., age 97, passed away on Friday December 19, 2025, in Shawano. Henry was born on October 23, 1928, in Dallas, TX to Henry L. and Eugenia "Jean" (Young) Berner, the oldest of 5 children. Raised in Antigo, WI, he attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison graduating in 1951 with a degree in Journalism. He then joined the family business at the Antigo Daily Journal. Henry served in the Army from 1951-1954. On June 21, 1952, he married Janice M. House in Antigo. The couple had a wonderful and loving 40 years before Janice passed in 1993. After a move to Shawano in 1958 he eventually owned Catencamp Transfer and Storage. On July 9, 1994, Henry was united in marriage to Maxine Braun at St. James Lutheran Church. After he retired, he and Maxine would spend winters in Florida.

Henry was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and attended senior worship services there. He was also a member of the Lions Club. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and bowling. Henry loved taking rides in the country with his caregiver Brenda Gruentzel that always ended with ice cream. He also always enjoyed a new car and dinners out with friends and family.

Henry is survived by his children, Mark (Karen) Berner of Fresno, CA, Scott (Kathy) Berner of Naples, FL, and Brian Berner of Shawano; three grandchildren, Alan Berner, Emily Berner and Amy Berner; two great-grandchildren Mason Berner and Madelyn Kuczynski Berner, brothers James Berner, Warsaw, IN, Michael Berner, Lake Geneva, WI. He is also survived by his step-children, Mark (Deb Stezenski) Braun of Shawano, Mindy Braun of Holmen, WI, David (Kathy) Braun of Vancouver, WA, and Daniel (Kathy) Braun of Shawano; eight step-grandchildren, Abbey (Ben) Fletcher, Alyssa Olson, Andrew (Heidi) Braun, Nathan (Holly) Braun, Joshua Braun, Matthew (Maggie Huang) Braun, Haanah Braun, and Maris Braun; and seven step-great-grandchildren. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Henry is preceded in death by his first wife, Janice Berner; second wife, Maxine Berner; granddaughter, Kelly Theresa Berner and sisters Sally Pierson and Robyn Berner.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025, at 11:00 am at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano with Vicar David Kaiser officiating. Visitation will be held at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano on Sunday, December 28, 2025, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and again at church on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of services. Military rites will be conducted at the church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
