Obituary

Herbert A. Chambers, Jr., age 73, of Shawano passed away peacefully in the early morning of January 18, 2016 after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Herb was born in Shawano on May 3, 1942. The only child of the late Herbert Sr. and Mary Mercedes (Hagen) Chambers. He graduated from Shawano High School, furthering his education in Chicago, IL.

Herb was united in marriage to Carol Braatz on January 11, 1964. They welcomed their beloved first daughter Dawn a year later. Many, many, years later their second daughter Jodi arrived.

Herb worked for Wisconsin Gas Company for many years, forging friendships that lasted his lifetime. After retiring in 2000, he soon wondered how he ever found time to work. During his retirement, he spent endless hours tinkering in his garage, repairing everything from A ir conditioners to Z ippers for his friends and family. He was always ready to lend a helping hand or dispense sound advice. (Although sometimes unsolicited, usually right.)

Herb was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed fishing in all seasons. He found humor in the fact that he could fish right alongside you on the ice and be the only one catching anything. He wouldn't say a word, just give you a smirk. That sometimes made it hard to fish next to him. In 2012 he got his first taste of Muskie fishing. Not sure it was really for him, he considered saying he had "done it twice…his first and his last". That all changed when his oldest grandson Sam brought a trophy Musky in the boat…it soon became an annual event.

He also looked forward to hunting with his grandsons. They all enjoyed sitting together and eating endless amounts of sweets. (Thankfully Halloween candy was on sale that time of year!) It brought him so much happiness (and, of course, more work) to be present with Ryan and Ben when they each shot their first deer. It was hard to tell who was more excited…the boys or Grandpa! We know he would've loved to have been there to see Parker bag his first deer as well.

Herb is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carol; their children, Dawn (fiancé Pat Miller) Troia of Madison, WI and Jodi (Mike) Winkler of Little Suamico, WI; four grandsons, Sam, Ryan, and Ben Winkler, and Parker Troia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Katherine Winkler.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at St. Jakobi Lutheran Church with Rev. Ronald Raddatz officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 11:00 am until the time of service. Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
