Obituary

Ila Mae H. Moede, age 95, fourth generation, lifelong Shawano resident and community historian, passed away at her home on Sunday, April 10, 2016. Shortly after her birth on September 3, 1920 in Neopit, Ila and her parents, the late George and Hilda (Netzel) Hill, moved back to Shawano. After high school, she was employed at Cantwell-Peterson Clinic. Ila always had an interest in flying, and became the first woman to solo an airplane from the Shawano airport. On May 25, 1946, in Shawano, Ila was united in marriage to Warren L. Moede, who preceded her in death on March 12, 1994. She worked at Moede & Son's Plumbing as a bookkeeper until her retirement. Ila had many interests, especially Shawano history. That interest lead her to author three books, "Grandma's Footprints: A History of Shawano, Wisconsin from 1843 to 1918", "Shawano A Humming Good Town", and "From the Pineries to the Present". She also enjoyed snowmobiling, biking, playing cards, working jigsaw puzzles, and traveling. Ila was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Shawano, where she taught Sunday school classes and an adult bible class for many years. She was the past matron for the Order of the Eastern Star, on the board for Friends of the Library, was a part of the Historical Society, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Ila is survived by: her son, Edward of Shawano; two grandsons, Warren James Edward "Jake" Moede and Alexander Nadeau Moede; and her brother, John Hill of Shawano.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Warren, her parents, two brothers, and five sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church in Shawano with Rev. Susan Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A memorial fund has been established at First Presbyterian Church in Ila's name.
