James C. Benz, age 82, of Oshkosh passed away on Monday January 26, 2026, in Shawano. He was born on April 5, 1943, in Milwaukee to the late Edward and Mary (Ostrowski) Benz. James lived in Wisconsin all his life. He proudly served as a Stevens Point police officer, retiring as a Sergent of the Traffic Bureau after 27 years and 1 month of service. James dedicated his life to protecting and supporting the people he served. He was deeply involved in the community both in and out of uniform. He was the past president of the Wisconsin Traffic and Safety Officers Association, served on the Wisconsin Juvenile Officers Association board of directors for four years, was active in the Wisconsin rail-road safety program Operation Lifesaver, and a past member of the Portage County Child Passenger Safety Association.
James taught courses at Mid-State and Fox Valley Tech Colleges for 30 years on alcohol awareness and achieved sobriety 20 years ago, a milestone that shaped his life. He was a passionate fisherman and an avid deer, turkey, and grouse hunter, loved downhill skiing with the family and a man who found great joy in the outdoors. He loved boating, spending time on the lake and enjoyed beautiful sunsets. A devoted fan of the Brewers and Packers, James attended as many games as possible. Above all, James was a loving father who was proud of his children. He also enjoyed cooking and sharing meals with those he loved.
James was a member of the Elks Club of Stevens Point, and a Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He attended Catholic churches in the Oshkosh area.
James is survived by his children, David Benz, Kathleen Benz, and Daniel (Heidi) Benz; grandchildren, Sydney, Austin, Olivia, Camilla, Brielle , and Brittany ; great-grandchild, Soren; and former wife, Sandra.
James is preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters and parents, Edward and Mary.
A celebration of life will be planned in the spring.
