James F. King, age 91, of Shawano, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2012 at his home. Born on December 14, 1920 in New London, he was the son of the late Frank H. King and Anna (Patterson) King Rupple. After graduating from Shawano High School and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, James enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. in 1942. During World War II he served as a tank company commander in the 3rd Marine Division in the South Pacific. James saw action in Bouganville, Guadalcanal, Guam and Iwo Jima and received the Combat Service Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation, and 2 Purple Hearts among others. He retired as a Captain in 1946. On November 20, 1948 in Gresham, he was united in marriage for 58 years to Marjorie Rose Fischer. The couple retired and moved back to Shawano in 1984 and were members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Jim was an ardent storyteller. Most of his stories were recollections of the war, the finer qualities of Shawano and Wisconsin life, and the Packers! He loved to recall the championship season of the Shawano High School basketball team of 1938 and the exploits and accomplishments of the football team. He had been recently interviewed by the Shawano Leader and the National Veterans History Project. The VHP is an oral history project that collects and preserves first hand interviews of America's veterans. These accounts are stored in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. He was a man loyal and dedicated to his family, community, and country. James is survived by: 2 daughters, Christine A. Bruney of Simi Valley, CA, Barbara J. (Ronald) Christianson of Brockton, MA; a son, Gregory J. (Nancy) King of Farmingdale, NJ; 8 grandchildren, Donna, Julie, Sarah, Lauren, James, Brady, Deirdre, Christopher; 2 great-grandchildren, Lilah, Julian; and 2 siblings, Robert C. (Mary) King of Duluth, GA, and John G. (Roz) Rupple of Shawano. James was preceded in death by: his wife, Marjorie on November 10, 2006; twin daughters; his parents; his step-father, George Rupple; and 2 sisters, Margaret Ann McCormick and Mary Ellen Heisel. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano with the Rev. Len Evers officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano with military rites conducted by the United States Marine Corps.
