James S. Peterson, age 91, of Shawano, passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at his home. Born on March 12, 1926 in Milwaukee, he was the son of the late Levi and Laura (Anderson) Peterson. James served our country during WWII in the United States Airforce. On September 17, 1949, he was united in marriage to Rachel Rusch in Baraboo. He worked for the State Patrol for 20 years and later for the Department of Motor Vehicles for 15 years before retiring and moving to Shawano. In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was the past president of the Shawano AARP, past commander of the American Legion, 40 Et 8 and the flying club. James enjoyed the Badgers, Packers, Brewers, ham radio, woodworking, going to the casino and participated in the Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington D.C.
James is survived by: his wife of 67 years, Rachel; their four children, Mark (Mary) Peterson of OK, Anne (Terry) Tischauser of Appleton, Brian (Judy) Peterson of Madison and Matt (Sherri) Peterson of Greenwood; five grandchildren, Harold (Kelly) Peterson, PhD, Althea (Thomas) Norman; Keith (Monica) Peterson, Katrina Peterson and Nathan Peterson; three great-grandchildren, Jessica, Charlotte and Cheyenne. He is further survived by his brother Mark (Caroline) Mulvaney of Oconomowoc.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano. Inurnment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Caroline. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Military honors will be conducted by the Shawano American Legion Post #117 at the funeral home following the service.
