Obituary

James "Jim" "Pokey" Reiter, passed away on April 18, 2022, after battling a rare neurological disorder for over 10 years. Jim was born January 8, 1951 to the late James and Lorraine (Beauprey) Reiter. He graduated from Ripon College in 1973 with a Bachelor's degree in Economics & Sociology/Anthropology. He also earned a Master's degree from Silver Lake College in 2005. Jim was passionate about serving his Menominee Tribe. He served as Associate Director of Ripon Upward Bound, working to get many Menominee youth to look towards college. He also belonged to the National Indian Education Association, Native American Tourism of Wisconsin, served as director of the JOM education program and was General Manager of the Menominee Casino for over 19 years, winning an award from the National Indian Gaming Association for pioneering and longevity in gaming. On August 23, 1975, he married Amy Ashley in Shawano.

While he was able, Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing in his free time. He often said his golf buddies were his extended family and he had his own fishing guide – Gatie Waukau – as they would often enjoy hours of fishing together. He also played in numerous bands for many years including Indian Echoes, Wolf River Band, Black Canyon Gang, Bits and Pieces, and Cannonball Express. They played for weddings, birthdays, or pretty much for any reason. When Jim became too ill to enjoy these things, he would follow the Packers, Bucks and Brewers.

Jim is survived by his wife of over 46 years, Amy; sons, Jamie and Scott; daughter, Nicole; grandsons Donavon, Domonic, Dayton, Sonny; brothers Daniel (Verna), Robert (Barbara), Don (LuAnn) and Ed (Roberta); sister, Margie; Uncle Lee White; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; a great nephew; his in-laws and special friends Jerry and Muggsy Thompson.

A funeral service for Jim will be held at 11:00 am, on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Keshena with Father Nonito Barra officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday after 3:00 pm until the time of the funeral on Tuesday at Father David Barrett Hall/St. Michael Church.

Jim's family would like to thank Paiser's Oak Haven for the wonderful care they gave to him during his stay with them. Even though he may have grumbled while there, when all was said and done, he wanted to go back. That speaks volumes.
