May 29, 1939 – August 4, 2025
Janet R. "Toots" Martin, her Oneida native name, Ka ŝ ni ne, age 86, passed away on Monday August 4, 2025, in Shawano. Janet was born on May 29, 1939, in Keshena to the late Calvin and Janette (King) Richmond. After graduating from high school, she went on to college in Milwaukee and received her nursing degree. On December 19, 1959, Janet was united in marriage to Wayne M. Martin in Immanuel Mohican Lutheran Church in the township of Red Springs. The couple spent a wonderful 64 years together before Wayne's passing in 2024. She taught catechism at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Gresham. She was a talented artist and enjoyed painting. Janet was a den mother for cub scouts for multiple years. In her free time, she enjoyed canning, playing bingo and slot machines at the casino, going to pow-wows, always had a book in her hands and watching soap operas. In her later years, she became a big Elvis fan. Janet was a bright and happy grandma and was supportive of her children and grandchildren in pursuing their dreams. She was the glue that held the family together; in times of need she wanted everyone to be happy and not to worry. Janet was always hospitable decorating her house and doing all the little tasks to make events and holidays special.
Janet is survived by her children, Barbara (Nuri) Elgutaa of Arizona, Marlow Martin of Bowler, Darwin Martin of Shawano, Dana Martin of California, and Carrie L. (Philip D. Walkup) Martin of Arizona; seven grandchildren, Dallas Tucker, Ryan Elgutaa, Jenelle (Eric) Schroeder, Jesse Martin, Vanessa DeNasha, Angela Martin, and Michaela Martin; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Janet is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne M. Martin; daughter, Diana Lynn; siblings, Donna Richmond and Donald "Ducky" Richmond; parents, Calvin and Janette Richmond.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday August 7, 2025, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Keshena with Deacon Mark Fuller officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday August 6, 2025, at Swedberg Funeral Home in Gresham starting at 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with a prayer service at 7:30 pm, then continuing on Thursday at the church from 9:30 am until the time of service. Inurnment will be held at Stockbridge Indian Burial Grounds.
