Obituary

Jean Constance (Boex) Galligan, 88, of Green Bay, WI, formerly of Cecil, WI, and Arlington Heights, IL, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, January 24, 2025.

Jean was born in April 1936 to James and Ruth (Murray) Boex and grew up on the west side of Green Bay.  Her future husband, Robert (Bob) Galligan, was captivated by her smile and red hair while he attended St. Norbert's College in De Pere. They married in May 1957 in Green Bay.

Throughout their relocations courtesy of the US Army and the American Can Co., they were blessed with four sons: John, Kevin, Brian, and Patrick. They eventually settled in Arlington Heights, IL, where Jean worked at the local community hospital and retired after more than 30 years. Jean was actively involved in her sons' activities that included Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Summer Camps, and religious education at St. Edna's Parish. She even taught them to cook using the (at the time) newly introduced microwave oven!

Bob and Jean built their next forever home overlooking Shawano Lake in Cecil, WI. They spent many weekends there connecting with old friends from the lakes chain (Berry, Legend, and Moshawquit) and getting grounded with the parish community at St. Martin's of Tours Catholic Church. After becoming permanent residents, Jean volunteered with the parish's food shelf and served as a leader with their Council of Catholic Women.

As a caregiver, Jean oversaw her son Kevin's health issues throughout his life. In 2003 after Kevin passed away, Jean relied heavily on her community and St. Martin's for support. She again rallied her village when Bob's health declined, and he passed away in 2008.

Jean managed the lake house independently for several years before deciding to move to the Woodside community in Green Bay. She shared coffee, Packer games, and volunteered by assisting with Sunday services. She could often be found walking the halls with her Woodside posse!

When asked how she was doing, she usually replied with a glint in her eye, "I'm good, and I'm behaving myself!" As her cancer diagnosis progressed, her responses transitioned to "I'm still behaving myself," to "I'm in good shape for the shape I'm in" – but always with a smile on her face.

Jean's spirit, faith, and love guided her through her entire life – good times and bad. She is survived by her siblings Patricia, Michael (Gail), and Robert (Sue); her children John (Sue Ellen), Brian, and Patrick (Debra), her grandchildren Carrie (Mark), Malorie (Elias), Madeline (Daniel), Genevieve, and Murphy; and two recent great-grandchildren.
