Joseph L. Sanapaw, Sr., age 78, of Keshena, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2017 at his home surrounded by family. Joseph was born on March 19, 1939 in Keshena to the late Jerome and Marcelene (Kinepoway) Sanapaw. He married Margaret Peters, who preceded him in death. On August 13, 1966, Joseph was united in marriage to Evanelle Kakwitch in Marinette. He lived most of his life on the Menominee Reservation and was key in helping to restore the hunting and fishing rights for the Menominee Tribe. Joseph loved going for rides in the woods, shanging, hunting, fishing, playing slots and was an avid Packer Fan.
Joseph is survived by: his wife, Evanelle; fourteen children, Roberta James, Raymond (Debra) Sanapaw, Alvin (Kendall) Sanapaw, Richard (Brenda) "Rowdy" Sanapaw, Kenneth (Geraldine) Sanapaw, Stefanie (Marty) Pamonicutt, LeRoy (Kerri) Sanapaw, Teejay (Sassy) Sanapaw, Shawn (Edwardine) Sanapaw, Kristin (Jarrod) Sanapaw, Alberta (Al) Zhuckkahosee, Diana (Geraldo) Muniz, Janet Sanapaw and Frances Sanapaw; 65 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren; five sisters and one brother, Irene Maulson, Isabell Cloud, Leona Sanapaw, Barbara Wheelock, Shelby (Leslie) Kaquatosh and Gerald (Marsha) Sanapaw and special brother Bobbie Perez.
He was preceded in death by two children, Joseph, Jr. and Lynette; his parents; and brothers and sisters, Raymond, Leroy, Bernard, Richard "Rocky" Sanapaw, Patricia Brisk and Marlene Denny.
Traditional funeral services will begin at 4:00pm on Friday, September 29, 2017 and continue until Monday at 1:00 pm at the Sanapaw residence, N1126 State Highway 47 in Keshena with Mr. Myron Pyawasit and Mr. Elmer Denny officiating.
