Joyous S. Bowen, age 91, of Town of Wescott, died peacefully at home on Thursday, September 3, 2015 with her family by her side. Born on February 21, 1924 in Green Bay, she was the daughter of Erwin Lewis Rohloff and Lenora Sophie (Nora) Raddant Rohloff. On December 20, 1952 she married Carl W. Bowen in Green Bay. She attended Fort Howard Elementary School and graduated from West High School in 1942. In 1965, Joyous became the first female letter carrier at the Green Bay post office. In 1984, she became the postmaster in Gresham, retiring in 1992. She was the last charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Green Bay. A Packers' season ticket holder since the 1940's, she was also a member of the Green Bay Women's Quarterback club, the first of its kind in the nation, during the 1950's. She was a member, secretary, and Federation director of NARFE (National Active & Retired Federal Employees) Chapter 403. Although Joyous was actively involved with many groups and organizations in her life, her work with the Shawano Folk Music Festival was her most recent endeavor. Since its beginning over 30 years ago, she worked to bring the gift of music to the Mielke Arts Center for all to enjoy. Joyous and her husband Carl enjoyed traveling around the United States on their Honda Goldwing motorcycle visiting and making many friends along the way. She was a Life Master Tour Rider and was proud to be the oldest female rider at the many rallies they attended. Joyous is survived by her husband of 62 years, Carl; her children, Colleen (Don) Black of Lexington, Kentucky, Melissa (Mike) Schuler of Shawano, Jay (Lisa) Bowen of Green Bay, and Kent (Karen) McKelvey; 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four of her children, James Bowen, Carolyn Bowen, Richard Bowen, and Jon Bowen. A memorial service to celebrate Joyous's life will be held at the Shawano County Park on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Come share your stories and memories with friends and family. A private family burial will be held at Wescott Lake Drive Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in Joyous's name for the Shawano Folk Music Festival. Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
