Karen L. "Tatāhkesewiahkiw" Martin, age 75, passed away surrounded by family on Monday December 4, 2023, in Shawano. Karen was born on June 28, 1948, in Keshena to the late James and Marjorie (Tourtillot) Komanekin. She was a graduate of Shawano High School. On July 2, 1966, she was united in marriage to Lawrence O. Martin, Jr. The couple enjoyed 54 years together before Lawrence passed away in 2021. The couple loved riding motorcycles together and were members of the Wind Jammers Motorcycle Club. Karen was an avid casino goer and enjoyed her slots. She loved dogs and owned many boxers throughout her life. Some would say she was a troublemaker… in a good way. Karen loved her children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.
Karen is survived by her children, Michael (Juliana), Lawrence O. Martin III, Dean (Melissa), Jean (Charlie), and Duane Murphy; grandchildren, Angel, April (Brian), Sheyenne (Kevin), Jared (Jasmin), Kayla (Steve), Jessica, Michael Lee (Shannon), Moshawquit (Emily), Zachary (Val), and Mikayla; twenty-one great-grandchildren; godson, Christopher Klein; siblings, Marjoel (Clifford) Wilber, Barbara May, Wesley Komanekin, Lisa Komanekin, Thomas Komanekin, Susan (Richard) Komanekin, Jason (Rebecca) Komanekin, Jamie (Tammy) Komanekin, Sandy Komanekin and Jeff (Kim) Komanekin; 21 great-grandchildren; special great-granddaughters, Mika Sage and Charlotte; in-laws, Cindy and Ed Boivin, Rosie and Oscie Long, Gloria and Randy Klein, Helene and Joe Caldwell, William Martin, Jane and Ron Otradovec, and Susan Martin. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Karen is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; daughter, Laura; parents, James and Marjorie; siblings, Constance in infancy, James Komanekin, Jr., Joseph Komanekin, Nancy Anthony and Kurt Komanekin; grandson, Charles Ackley; and daughter-in-law, Shelly Martin.
A traditional service for Karen will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday December 7, 2023, at the family residence W2525 Keshena Lake Road, in Keshena. Visitation will be held at the home starting on Tuesday December 5, 2023, at 4:00 pm and continuing until Thursday. Burial will be held at Menominee Nation Cemetery.
